In the book Double Helix by Nancy Werlin, the main character is Eli. He is the saludatorian of his high school, and is offered a job by the famous Dr. Quincy Wyatt. Eli is thrilled and takes the job, but his dad strongly urges Eli to stay away from Dr. Wyatt for some reason. While all of this is going on, Eli's mom is mentally sick and in the hospital. It's not clear yet what is wrong with her exactly, but I feel that it has something to do with Dr. Wyatt.
I've come to this conclusion because during Eli's interview, Dr. Wyatt seems to know Eli and his mom a little too well. Dr. Wyatt knows how tall Eli will be, that he could be the class valedictorian but is holding back, and he gets mad that Eli is taking a year off before college. All of these hints make me suspect that there is some important connection bewtween Dr. Wyatt, Eli, and his mom.
